Concentration: The Sixth Personal Leadership Characteristic

"Nothing great has ever been accomplished without the power of concentration." - Napoleon Hill

Personal leadership characteristics are the characteristics adopted by people who have learned to effectively influence and lead themselves. These people are called personal leaders. One of the characteristics they have adopted that truly helped personal leaders accomplish anything is this: they have learned to harness the power of concentration.

The Power of Concentration

Concentration means focusing on what you want to achieve and then designing all your activities to support that goal. It means that you will deliberately choose what must be done and do it. All actions must be pointed towards accomplishing a certain goal. Define a goal and then design a plan on how you will get there. You don't have to create big action steps now. But once you start to plan your actions, know that you will eventually get to where you want to go.

For example, if you are want to buy a house, make sure your plans are aligned with your goal. Are you overspending on something? It might be a good time to audit your expenses. Are you saving your money? Are you investing your excess money? Do you make your money work for you? These are some of the questions that will help you know if your actions are aligned with your goal.

Concentration is power. It is harnessing all your powers and abilities to achieve something worthwhile. In creating a business for example, are your time spent effectively or do you procrastinate? Are you finishing your task or not? Even more important, are the actions you're making take you closer to your goal or not?

Harness Your Power

When you harness the power of concentration, you start to feel that you are making progress. No matter how small your activity is, once you know that it is concentrated on your goal, you will start to progress. And we all intuitively know that progress brings happiness.

One of the most frustrating feeling is being busy doing something, yet not make any progress. Or at least feel that you're not making any progress. It's very frustrating. But, being concentrated to your goals and designing all your actions to support that goal will give you assurance. Assurance that you will eventually see the results of your labor.

Concentration is like a laser beam. When you harness all your powers to accomplish something, you will surprise yourself. Think about it. Was there ever a time in your life when you started to concentrate and focus on doing just one thing and surprised yourself? Perhaps it was when you were in high school, trying to learn a new instrument. Or perhaps, learning a new language?

We all have experienced the power that focus can bring to our lives. It's just that we don't practice it everyday. Most people don't attain or achieve anything noteworthy because they are all over the place. We sometimes try to do everything. Even if that distracts us from achieving our goal.

Concentration, combined with other personal leadership characteristics especially self control and self discipline will move you further. You will surprise yourself on how much progress you've had. Let's do a little experiment. Think about how much progress you've made in the last five years of your life. Now, if you haven't utilize the power of focus and concentration, you will be surprised that you made so much progress. How much more if you consciously concentrate all your efforts towards your goal?

Le Mot De La Fin.

Once you concentrate on what you want and start to design your actions towards it, you will gain momentum. And you will make progress. If you are feeling like nothing's happening, don't give up just yet. Assess what you're doing. Maybe you're trying to be all over the place. You really won't achieve anything if you do. It's now time to refocus your focus. It's time to concentrate on what you do best.
